The Railway College of Central South University (formerly Changsha Railway College) was formerly the Central South Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, which was merged from the civil engineering majors of Wuhan University, Hunan University, Nanchang University and Guangxi University with the railway majors of Sichuan University, Yunnan University and South China University of Technology when the 1953 department was adjusted.
1958, Hunan Provincial Party Committee decided to change its name to Hunan Institute of Engineering on the basis of the original Central South Institute of Architecture and Engineering, and 1959 changed its name to Hunan University.

The school now has civil engineering, industrial design, communication engineering, transportation, engineering mechanics, engineering management, business administration, financial management, architecture, urban planning, automation, accounting, statistics, sociology, law, English, French, building environment and equipment engineering, mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, electronic information science and technology.
At present, there are 22 undergraduate majors, including computer science and technology, transportation equipment information engineering, international economy and trade, covering engineering, science, literature, economics, management, law and other disciplines. The school enrolls students nationwide, including graduate students, undergraduates, adult education and continuing education.
