Later, he moved to the west with the school and taught at Xi Jiaotong University. He used to be the director of the Institute of Lubrication Theory and Bearing of Xi Jiaotong University (1986- 1997) and the director of the Open Research Laboratory of Lubrication Theory and Rotor Bearing System of the State Education Commission (1994- 1999). At present, he is a professor at Xi Jiaotong University, a doctoral supervisor, director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Tribology in Tsinghua University, a member of the discipline evaluation group of the the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, a member of the education reform advisory group of the State Education Commission for the 2 1 century, the chief expert of modern design technology of AMTRC in the Institute of Mechanical Science, and a part-time professor in more than ten universities. Director of Editorial Board of China Mechanical Engineering, Deputy Director of Editorial Board of Journal of Tribology, Editorial Board of Journal of Mechanical Engineering Engineering Design, Editorial Board of Journal of Engineering Tribology, etc. He has served as the first, second and third vice chairman (1979- 1992), the fourth chairman (1992- 1997) and the fifth standing committee (1997) of Tribology Society of China Mechanical Engineering Society. 1994 was elected as the first academician of China Academy of Engineering in May. In these forty-five years, the courses offered include mechanical principle, mechanical parts, vibration theory, hydrodynamic lubrication theory, elastic hydrodynamic lubrication theory, bearing technology, tribology, modern design and so on.
He developed the original system method based on simple tribology system, put forward the basic idea of tribology (large) system system engineering, and constructed the theoretical framework. In addition, important and rich theoretical and application achievements have been made in tribology and dynamic design of rotor bearing system of large turbo-generator set and high-speed turbine machinery and cylinder liner piston assembly system of internal combustion engine, and a lot of work has been done in promoting tribology design and establishing tribology database. He has published a large number of works, summed up three basic laws of tribology: system dependence, time dependence and coupling of different disciplines, and suggested that they be listed as three axioms of tribology. He pointed out that the traditional theory and technology did not consider the coupling of dynamic behavior, which is a brand in the history of tribology.
