The predecessor of Zhejiang University, Qiushi College, was founded in 1897 and 1928, and was named National Zhejiang University.
1952, when the departments of colleges and universities in China were adjusted, most of the departments in Zhejiang were transferred to brother universities and Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the main parts left in Hangzhou were divided into several single-subject colleges, which later developed into the original Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University respectively. 1998, four universities with the same roots merged to form the new Zhejiang University.

Zhejiang University is a university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC). It is one of the first seven "2 1 1 Project" and the first nine "985 Project" national key universities in China. It is also one of the top universities in China.
