Approved by the Ministry of Education, Xiangnan College was formed in 2003 by the merger of the former Chenzhou Normal College, Chenzhou Medical College, Chenzhou Education College and Chenzhou Normal College. Its school history can be traced back to 19 12, and it is the third women's normal school in Hunan Province.

The school is located in Chenzhou City, the 18th blessed land in the world and the south gate of Hunan Province. It is a national model school for standardization of spoken and written languages, a national school with national defense education characteristics, Hunan Civilization College, a garden-style unit in Hunan Province, a demonstration school for innovation in educational informationization in Hunan Province, an experimental college for transformation and development of ordinary colleges and universities in Hunan Province, and a member unit of China Universities of Applied Sciences (College) Alliance. The school is divided into two campuses, Wang Xian and Beihu. The main campus (Wang Xian Campus) is located at the eastern foot of the scenic Wang Xianling Ecological Park.

In recent years, students have won 35 national group awards, 66 provincial group awards and 306 provincial individual awards for participating in various competitions, among which students won the first prize (ranking first) for participating in the Sixth National Medical College Students' Clinical Skills Competition in Central China. The basketball team entered the national top 16 of CUBA China University Basketball League for three consecutive years, and once entered the national top eight (ranked fifth). The initial employment rate of graduates remains above 90%, and it is an "excellent unit of the' first-hand project' in the employment work of colleges and universities in Hunan Province".
