Joseph Worcester (1784 ~ 1865) reduced and improved the English Dictionary published by samuel johnson (1755), which was highly recognized by the society. Later, he worked for Webster's Dictionary and published the American English Dictionary in 1829. After tempering these two books, Worcester learned from his experience and published his first English comprehensive sound and meaning dictionary in 1830.

1890, the first Webster's International Dictionary was published, with the entry 175000 as the call. Three years later, the standard dictionaries of Fink and Wagner were published, supporting 304,000 entries, which directly challenged Webster's "full-page" status.
Meriam, publisher of 1909, published the first edition of Webster's New International Dictionary, and the number of entries further increased to 350,000. 19 13, fink and Wagner published a new standard dictionary again, with a scale of 2,800 pages and 450,000 entries.
1934, meriam published Webster's New Second Edition International Dictionary, which expanded the number of entries to 600,000 in one fell swoop. But later Fink and Wagner's dictionaries were not revised, and Webster's dictionary really dominated the United States.
