My senior, who graduated from Translation College for five years, was invited to give a brief answer. Our class was not called "Van Gogh", but called the Translation Institute, which had a translation department and had to learn both interpretation and translation.
As a graduate, I want to say that the School of Translation of International Studies University is a very good choice for me, no matter whether you are engaged in translation or language-related career in the future.
Translation college has a strong learning atmosphere, many courses, a large amount of practice and high requirements for teachers. In addition, the high admission score of this major means that your classmates are quite thoughtful and demanding of themselves, which basically determines that you can't waste your time in these four years. Many of my peers in other schools are confused in college, just brushing Taobao, playing mahjong in the dormitory and falling in love every day. Most of my classmates and I (of course, it also depends on my personality and interests), besides attending classes, joining clubs and student unions, the rest of the time may be reading a lot of books and doing research. Those who have basically studied this major do not need to take the exam, and those who are interested in this industry will definitely take the exam. After learning a second foreign language, the teacher will also recommend you to take the certificate of the corresponding language. I don't take part in TEM4 and TEM8 myself. I chose to take BEC and French band 4), take a self-help tour to see the world during holidays (my first independent trip in my life was to go to Taiwan Province with my roommates when I was a sophomore), join some non-profit organizations as volunteers and so on.
Looking back after work, you will realize that four years of college is a very precious period, and it is difficult to have enough time to study and practice in the future. There are several teachers that my classmates and I like very much. Mr. Cheng Wei, the vice president when I graduated, was also my thesis supervisor. He was a beautiful associate professor with rich academic and practical experience in translation. From the journalism class of freshmen to the translation class of juniors and seniors, apart from the knowledge itself, she taught us more about cultivating critical thinking and some study habits, including paying attention to international politics and a certain degree of news sensitivity, which were inspired by Teacher Cheng Wei.
Ms Shen Xiaoyan, she has a strong experience in interpretation. I won't say much about the introduction of the department. She is always full of energy, and attending her class will be infected by her personality charm. She would think, "Ah, this is the kind of person I want to be, but it seems hard to be." She will also share her professional experiences and stories after class. Some principles of dealing with people, even if I don't engage in translation-related work after graduation, have benefited me a lot.
Finally, I won't talk about the specific content of the course, because the situation may change after I graduate for many years, and because the school official will introduce it more clearly. What I want to say is that the choice of schools and majors depends on the faculty and curriculum. More importantly, the atmosphere and basic conditions for cultivating students' ability, including what your classmates are like, will have a great influence on you. Because after graduating from college, you may not be engaged in four-year major at all, but the way of thinking, principles, knowledge and interests you have learned here can be brought to any field and any industry.
