Shanghai Jiaotong University ranks fourth in the country, and it is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, with the same school and municipality directly under the Central Government as Shanghai. It ranks among the "Double First-class", "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project" national key construction universities and is a member of the Nine Schools Alliance. The school was founded in 1896, and has been renamed and divided into disciplines for many times. 1959, the school was named "Shanghai Jiaotong University" and merged with the former Shanghai Second Medical University in 2005.
