The school originated from China People's Liberation Army Military Engineering College (Harbin Military Industry) founded by 1953; 1970, Harbin Institute of Shipbuilding Engineering, with the naval engineering department as the main body, was established in the original site of Harbin military industry; 198 1 became the first unit with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees; 1994, renamed Harbin Engineering University.
By 2022, Harbin Engineering University will be ranked 2nd18 in QS Asian University and 53rd in China University of Soft Science. The school covers an area of1403,000 square meters, and the building area is11376,000 square meters.
