The history of Wuhan University can be traced back to 1893. Governor Zhang Zhidong of Huguang invited the Qing government to establish a self-improvement school. Later, it was named National Wuhan University on 1928, which was the first batch of national universities in modern China. In 2000, the school merged with Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University to form the new Wuhan University.
As of July 2020, the school covers an area of 5 195 mu with a building area of 2.72 million square meters. There are 34 colleges (departments) in six universities and three first-class affiliated hospitals. There are 47 first-class doctoral programs, 58 first-class master programs and 23 undergraduate programs/kloc-0.
