Southern Medical University is the first batch of universities jointly established by the Ministry and the province in China, one of the first eight universities in China to offer eight-year clinical medical graduate students and doctoral degrees, the first batch of pilot universities in China to train outstanding doctors, and the key construction universities of high-level universities in Guangdong Province.

The school, formerly known as the First Military Medical University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, was founded in 195 1, 1979 and was designated as a national key university. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province as a whole and renamed Southern Medical University.
