School of International Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University was established in May 2000. It is a second-level college responsible for enrollment (undergraduate, master and doctoral students), management and specialized in teaching and research of Chinese as a foreign language. The college is located in Taoliyuan, Xuhui Campus of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and has a comprehensive office in the administrative building of Minhang Campus. Since the establishment of the College, the education of international students in Jiaotong University has developed rapidly. The proportion of students studying for undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees has increased significantly, and the level of international students has improved significantly. By the end of 2004, there were 4,005 international students from more than 60 countries in five continents, including South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Canada, North Korea, Australia and Thailand, ranking among the top five universities in China.
The department of the Institute of International Education consists of 10 departments, namely, the College Office, the Admissions Office, the Academic Affairs Office, the International Student Office, the Minhang General Office, the Sino-Japanese Cultural Exchange Center, the Chinese Department, the China Language Institute, the Chinese Language Engineering and Testing Center, and the Teaching Center for Chinese as a Foreign Language, which are respectively responsible for the enrollment, management and teaching of international students. The strong faculty enables the college to carry out teaching and research based on the academic advantages of the school. The college dormitory for international students has complete facilities, and professional property management personnel carry out safe, scientific and humanized management. At the same time, the college has 35 special classrooms for international students, including 12 multimedia classrooms and 2 voice classrooms. All these provide excellent teaching, living environment and quality service for international students.
The college not only offers a variety of Chinese learning courses, but also has a Chinese language undergraduate major, which can train students to use Chinese for Chinese teaching, translation, diplomacy, management and other work, and a master's degree in linguistics and applied linguistics can train advanced applied talents. Zhang Shengkun, a native of Fenghua, Zhejiang Province, is a professor and doctoral supervisor.
