China Ocean University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, with distinctive features and complete marine and aquatic disciplines. It is also a key university under the National "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project".
The motto of the school is "All rivers run into the sea, so take it far".
The school was founded in 1924. After private Qingdao University, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University and Shandong University, it developed into Shandong Ocean University in 1959 and was identified as one of the national key comprehensive universities in 1960. 1988 was renamed Qingdao Ocean University.
The school has three campuses: Laoshan Campus, Yushan Campus and Fushan Campus, covering an area of more than 2,400 mu. College 18, Basic Teaching Center 1. At present, there are more than 25,700 full-time students, including undergraduates 1.53 million, postgraduates/7,500 and doctoral students 1.80 million. There are more than 3,300 faculty members, including more than 700 full-time teachers 1.700, more than 360 doctoral supervisors, more than 570 senior professional technicians, more than 650 deputy senior professional technicians, 5 academicians of China Academy of Sciences and 5 academicians of China Academy of Engineering. Wang Meng, a famous writer, is a consultant and honorary dean of the School of Literature and Journalism. Wang Shuguang, former director of the State Oceanic Administration, is a school consultant and president of the Institute of Ocean Development; Qian Ren, an internationally renowned physicist, is consultant, distinguished professor and dean of Xingyuan College; 12 famous writers, including Nobel Prize in Literature winner Mo Yan, were hired as "resident writers" in the school.
The school aims to cultivate high-quality innovative talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical beauty, national spirit and social responsibility, international vision and sense of cooperation and competition, scientific spirit and humanistic accomplishment, innovative consciousness and practical ability, and undertakes the special mission of cultivating leading talents and backbone forces in the national marine industry. The school follows the undergraduate education concept of "general education as the body and professional education as the purpose", implements the limited conditions of independent course selection system and academic qualification and graduation professional recognition system, and strives to cultivate compound and high-quality talents. Among the graduates, 13 have been elected as academicians of China Academy of Sciences or China Academy of Engineering, and 3 have successively served as directors of the State Oceanic Administration. More than half of the 75 scientists who participated in China's first Antarctic expedition were school graduates.
The school has 3 teaching and research ships, including 3,500-ton "Dongfanghong-2" marine comprehensive scientific research practice ship, 300-ton "Angel 1" scientific research transport supply ship and 2,600-ton "Haida" marine geology and geophysics survey ship (enterprise cooperation), and 50,000 ships are under construction. This school is the main supporting unit of Qingdao National Laboratory of Marine Science and Technology, presiding over the work of two functional laboratories of "Ocean Dynamic Process and Climate" and "Marine Drugs and Biological Products", and participating in the construction of the other six functional laboratories with backbone strength.
Nine disciplines (fields), such as earth science, botany and zoology, engineering technology, chemistry, materials science, agronomy, biology and biochemistry, environmentology and ecology, pharmacology and toxicology, rank in the top 1% of American ESI global scientific research institutions.
