The teaching and research section of mechanical principle and mechanical design is directly under the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. It mainly undertakes the teaching of three compulsory courses of mechanical principle, mechanical design and mechanical design foundation and their corresponding practical teaching links for undergraduate and junior college students, such as School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, School of Communications, School of Biochemical Engineering, School of Materials and Metallurgy, School of Land and Resources, School of Electric Power, Xinzhi College and Adult Education College. There are two modules in mechanical engineering and its automation direction: virtual manufacturing and digital engineering, and electromechanical system design and control. The teaching and research section of material forming and control and the discipline of material processing, formerly known as the casting teaching and research section of Kunming University of Science and Technology and the specialty of casting technology and equipment, was established in 1960. It is one of the teaching and research sections and traditional dominant disciplines with a high academic level, strong scientific and technological service ability and good development momentum in Yunnan Province, and occupies an important position in Yunnan Province, in which the field of material liquid forming has long been in the leading position in China. After years of adjustment, combination, broadening, perfection and development, the discipline of material processing has adapted to the latest national catalogue of disciplines and specialties and social needs, and has covered the original four majors of casting, welding, forging and heat treatment. At present, it has developed into a multi-level and complete series of education system for postdoctoral, doctor of engineering, master of engineering, master of engineering and undergraduate. More than 400 undergraduates, 130 masters and 10 doctors have been trained for national and local construction in Yunnan, and most of them have become the backbone in the field of material processing.

The teaching and research section of material forming and control has a team of teachers with reasonable age, knowledge and subject structure, good ideological quality and high academic level. Over the years, the teaching and research section and materials processing engineering discipline have been aiming at the international academic frontier and the technical problems of domestic enterprises in the province, vigorously carried out scientific research work, and achieved a large number of scientific and technological achievements, making important contributions to the economic construction of China and Yunnan Province. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 200 projects entrusted by the Ninth Five-Year Plan, the National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education, the Yunnan Science and Technology Research Foundation, the Natural Science Foundation and enterprises. The teaching and research section and materials processing discipline have a broad foundation for international and domestic cooperation and exchange. We have long-term cooperation and exchanges with the United States, Britain, Germany, France and Japan, and famous professors come to give lectures every year. Professor Liu Baicheng, distinguished academician of the Academy of Engineering and doctoral supervisor of Tsinghua University, and Dr Xing Jiandong, doctoral supervisor and professor of Xi Jiaotong University and dean of the School of Materials, are part-time professors. In recent years, nearly 10 people have gone abroad to study, research, visit and study for degrees.
