In the Middle Ages, universities had "three powers", namely, the theocracy of the church, the privilege of the monarch and the autonomy of universities. These three forces balance each other. When exercising autonomy, universities are mainly not restricted by churches and monarchs in some educational and academic aspects, which provides the most effective guarantee for academic freedom.
