HCI mainly studies the interaction between human and computer. It is generally considered as an interdisciplinary subject in computer science, behavioral science, design and other related fields.

HCI has two major directions, one is the design direction, which belongs to the art category. If you want to apply for this direction, you need to design some interfaces and submit a portfolio. There is also a general direction that is biased towards engineering. For science and engineering students who apply for HCI, engineering is the most important.
