In the history of Shanghai's higher education development, there is a name that cannot be bypassed, and that is St. John. Founded by American Anglican missionaries in the middle of19th century, this school is the earliest and largest institution of higher learning in Shanghai Christian University. In the course of nearly a hundred years of running St. John's School, many Chinese and foreign celebrities have appeared. Joseph Schlosser, the first headmaster of St John's, was one of them. Schlosser, an American missionary, came to China to preach in 1859. From 65438 to 0860, Schlosser was appointed President of the Savior Church of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui. 1877 was appointed bishop of Shanghai diocese in the United States. 1878, Schlosser returned to Shanghai from the United States and started to establish St. John's College. 1879, St. John's College was established, with the school supervisor (principal) as the teacher. In memory of the founder of St. John, alumni once raised funds to build a "Shihuai Hall" on campus, which is a Chinese-style building to express their thoughts on this scholar who connects China and the West and communicates with China and foreign countries. Speaking of St. John, another foreign missionary I have to mention is Francis Liszt Hawkes Porter. Francis Liszt Hawkes Porter, an American missionary, was born in new york. When I was young, I taught China students Sunday school in the United States, that is, I intended to come to China. 1886, 22-year-old Francis Liszt Hawkes Porter was sent to China by the Anglican Church. After coming to China, Francis Liszt Hawkes Porter was appointed as the English teacher of St. John's College, and two years later, he was appointed as the dean of St. John's College. 1896, the college was upgraded to a university, and Francis Liszt Hawkes Porter was appointed as the president of St. John's University. He is also in charge of the affiliated middle school. Francis Liszt Hoxbott dressed in China, imitated the habits of China, and married a wife from China. He devoted himself to Christian school education. In order to develop St. John's University, he devoted himself to painting and management all his life, and turned a school with simple buildings and only middle school level into a famous institution of higher learning with an area of several hundred acres and a school output value of several million dollars, which integrates medical college, seminary and liberal arts college. Francis Liszt Hawkes Porter advocated the separation of education and politics, and opposed political movements based on schools. To this end, he had several conflicts with patriotic students. He also stubbornly resisted the requirement that private schools should be registered with the Ministry of Education of the National Government, so that St. John's University did not complete the registration formalities with the China government until 1947. 1939, Francis Liszt Hawkes Porter, who worked in Yoda for more than 50 years, retired, but still served as honorary president. 194 1 returned to the United States, 1946 came to China again and died in Shanghai in March of the following year. Among the pioneers of "Yoda", there is also a Chinese pastor, and he is Yan Yongjing. Yan Yongjing was originally from Shandong and later moved to Shanghai. 1854, Yan Yongjing was sent by the Anglican Church to study in the United States. 1862 returned to China after completing his studies. He worked as an interpreter for the British Consulate in Shanghai and the Ministry of Public Concession. 1878, Yan Yongjing helped Schroeder to establish St. John's College as the president 188 1 year. He had arranged for young children who had been brought abroad by Hong Rong to return to China to teach. Later, St. John's University named the boys' dormitory "Siyantang" to commemorate Yan Yongjing's achievements. In 188 1 and 1885, Yan Yongjing wrote to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology twice to protest against the regulations that China people are not allowed to visit the Bund Park. St John's University has many famous alumni, most of whom are active in business, politics, diplomacy, education and medicine in China. Former Vice President Rong Yiren is an alumnus of Yoda. Other well-known alumni include diplomats Ke Sze Sao and Gu Weijun; Writers Lin Yutang and Zou Taofen; Scientist Zhou Youguang; Educators Zhang Boling and Meng Xiancheng; Industrialists Liu Hongsheng and Jing Shuping; Architect Chen Congzhou; Religious figure Ding Guangxun; I.M. Pei, a famous architect, is also a graduate of the middle school affiliated to St. John's University. At present, the oldest alumnus of St. John's University is Zhou Youguang (1906 65438+ 10/3-). When Zhou Youguang was one hundred years old, he said to himself, "I am interested in going to college. I applied to two universities and both passed. One is St. John's University in Shanghai, and the other is Nanjing Normal University, which later became Southeast University and later became Central University. Today is Nanjing University. Why are you admitted to two universities? Several classmates taller than me advised me to go to St. John's University. I went to Shanghai to attend St. John's University and got it. But the tuition of St. John's University is extremely expensive, which costs more than 200 silver dollars a semester. When I was in college, my family was the poorest and had no money. At that time, the time of each university exam was different, so I went to Nanjing to take the exam and got it. Nanjing Normal University doesn't need tuition. I'm going to Nanjing. My sister teaches in Shanghai, and her colleague Zhu Yujun heard that I was admitted to St. John's University and didn't want to study. She said to my sister, "it's harder to get into St. John's University than to get into the top. It's a pity that your brother didn't get into St. John's University. I have no money either. I'll borrow it from my mother and let him go to school. I'll think of something after school. "Her mother said," I don't have any money now, but I have a suitcase with a lot of dowry in it. If I pawn a suitcase, I can pawn it for more than 200 yuan. "Their home is also in Suzhou. Her mother likes me very much. This old lady is very kind to me. Her suitcase is in the back room. It hasn't been opened for many years. It's useless There is a play called "Borrowing as a pawn", borrowing things as a pawn. So I went to St. John's University. "
It is also worth remembering that although St. John's University ended its operation in Chinese mainland after liberation, its overseas alumni have been trying to restore their education. From 65438 to 0967, Taiwan Province Yoda alumni founded Xinpu Technical College, which was upgraded to St. John's University of Science and Technology in 2005. In addition, with the support of the University of British Columbia, St. John's alumni established St. John's College for graduate students.
