Harbin Engineering University, referred to as "Harbin Project", is located in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China. Universities established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Education, Heilongjiang Province, Harbin City and the Navy are ranked as "double first-class" and "2 1 1 project".

Excellent engineer education and training plan, national undergraduate innovation experiment plan, national high-level university construction postgraduate plan, national new engineering research and practice project, China government scholarship receiving institution for overseas students, the first batch of demonstration universities in China to deepen innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, national college students' cultural quality education base, national innovation and entrepreneurship training demonstration base for new talents, and national college practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base.

Member units of the University Alliance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Arctic University Alliance, the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance, and the Sino-Russian Engineering University Alliance, and the lead unit of the International Alliance for Innovation and Cooperation in Ship and Ocean Engineering, were listed in the "2 1 century plan for strengthening the army through people" by the Ministry of Education and the General Political Department.

The school originated from the Military Engineering College of China People's Liberation Army (Harbin Military Industry) founded by 1953. 1970, Kuchen established Harbin Institute of Shipbuilding Engineering, with the naval engineering department as the main body, in the original site of Harbin military industry; 198 1 became the first unit with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees; 1994, renamed Harbin Engineering University.

As of February 2023, the school covers an area of1400,500 square meters, with a building area of1137,600 square meters, and the library has 7.598 million books. There are 17 colleges (departments and departments) and 63 undergraduate majors; Post-Doctoral Research Center 12, 3 post-doctoral research stations, 5 first-class doctoral programs1,32 first-class doctoral programs, 3 doctoral degree categories, and master degree categories1/.
