How many years did you study in German Medical College?
German medical education model

In Germany, medicine is not a familiar undergraduate-master-doctor system, but a university study course with a total accreditation time of 6 years and 3 months. The graduation certificate obtained after the end is not a general degree certificate or diploma, but an endorsement. The whole medical research is divided into:

1. Clinical preparation course -2 years

(vorklinischer Studienabschnitt)

The subjects of study are: basic medical disciplines and related basic natural sciences. There are biology, chemistry and physics in the first semester. Basic medical courses, such as anatomy, biochemistry-molecular biology and physiology, are offered in the second and third semesters. The third and fourth semesters provide comprehensive and instructive courses related to clinical practice.

After the first two years, you need to take the first national unified examination (erstes Staatsexamen), and you can continue your clinical study after passing it.

2. Clinical courses -3 years

(klinischer Studienabschnitt)

At this stage, clinical training of common diseases, medical clinical diagnosis and laboratory diagnosis, as well as specific branch training are carried out.

Among them, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and general internal medicine must undergo special and complete practice to deepen their practical ability and academic level before graduation.

After three years of clinical study, you need to pass the second national examination (zweites Staatsexamen) to continue your internship next year.

3. Clinical practice year-1 year

(praktisches Jahr)

The last academic year is the internship year, otherwise you can't graduate from the medical profession. The prerequisite for participating in the internship is that you can provide the necessary proof of academic performance. One year's internship is conducted in a university hospital or a teaching hospital of the Department of Medicine, or you can use a hospital recognized by foreign countries. It is divided into three stages, each stage 16 weeks.

4. Prepare for the third national examination for 3 months.

(drittes Staatsexamen)

After passing the third national examination (drittes Staatsexamen), you can get the qualification certificate of practicing doctor. It is worth mentioning that the qualification certificate of medical practitioners is one of the necessary conditions for engaging in clinical medical work in Germany, and the only way to obtain the qualification certificate is to take the third national examination.

You passed the third national examination and got the endorsement. In fact, you just became a general practitioner, and you don't have the knowledge and professional title of a specialist. Moreover, at this stage in Germany, you can't practice medicine without further training of specialists (Facharztausbildung).

Therefore, after medical graduation, your study career has not stopped, and the next specialized training will be conducted in the hospital. At the same time, you will work in the department where you want to do specialized courses as an Assistenzarzt to accumulate experience. The duration of specialist training is generally 5-7 years, during which I work as a doctor in a hospital and get paid. At the end of this period, you need to join Facharztprüfung before you can get the title of Facharzt.

Application method of German medical specialty

1. Apply through the university website.

This method is also called "unified recruitment". Students apply, schools or research institutes screen according to their needs, and then interview. It should be noted that the deadline of the project, everyone must complete the application before DDL.

2. Contact your interested project department.

This method is also called "direct contact". Through the usual understanding of the major, online or through the introduction of professors interested in the major, I sent a letter directly, expressing my interest in the research direction of the laboratory, hoping to enter the laboratory and study under the guidance of my tutor. There is no time limit for the application mode of "direct contact". Whether you can enter the laboratory depends mainly on the tutor.

These two methods have their own advantages. In the first method, tutors and students choose from each other. As tutors, students can get regular guidance and have the opportunity to attend academic conferences. Because the doctoral program is under the responsibility of the state or scientific research institutes, the funds are abundant and the scholarships are guaranteed.

The second advantage is that everyone has the right to apply for projects that they are really interested in, or to study with their favorite tutors. The right of independent choice is greater. Generally speaking, more students apply for German doctor of medicine, taking the road of "direct contact".
