The National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government jointly established a university, which is a key construction university in Shanghai.
The context of the school originated from Hujiang University founded by 1906 and German Medical College founded by 1907. In the early 1950s, the former Hujiang University and the former National Shanghai Higher Vocational College of Machinery (in the former site of German Medical College) were transformed into Shanghai Institute of Machinery (1994 renamed east china institute of technology) and Shanghai Institute of Machinery respectively, and the two universities merged to form Shanghai University of Science and Technology on 1996. 65438-0998, the school was transferred from the former Ministry of Mechanical Industry to Shanghai for management.
