Central South University is a public institution, because it is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and the Central Government of People's Republic of China (PRC). Ranked among the first batch of "Double First Class", "985 Project" and "2 1 1 project" in China, and was selected as the first batch of "1/plan".

One of the first five universities in China to carry out the eight-year medical education pilot program, the first university in China to train active military officers with a master's degree in integration of finger technology, a university with typical experience in employment of China graduates, one of the top ten universities in China, and an important member of the China-Central Asia University Alliance and the China-Russia Jiaotong University Alliance.
