Hainan University has two horticulture majors. One major is general horticulture, which mainly studies the principles of garden green space planning, garden planning and design, garden architecture, garden engineering, garden dendrology, garden floral science, ecology (including landscape ecology and urban ecology), garden plant cultivation and conservation, garden nursery science, garden preliminary design (including morphological design and expression techniques), garden plant landscaping, ecological landscape planning and so on. Cultivate knowledge of ecology, landscape plants and ornamental horticulture, landscape planning and design, landscape engineering, landscape management, etc., and have the ability to cultivate, maintain and manage garden plants in urban construction, gardens, forestry departments and flower enterprises, plant landscaping and planting design, ecological environment protection, ecological restoration, planning and design, construction management and scientific research of various urban and rural garden green spaces and garden buildings, and be able to engage in the planning of scenic parks, forest parks and urban garden green spaces.

Another major is horticulture (flower and landscape design), mainly studying botany, plant physiology and biochemistry, horticultural plant breeding, soil fertilization, biostatistics, horticultural plant pest control, horticultural plant cultivation, ornamental dendrology, ornamental flower science, artistic basis, garden design, horticultural plant biotechnology, horticultural product storage and marketing, and facility gardening. To cultivate the basic theories and skills of biology and horticulture. Understand the frontier and trend of flower science development, develop morally, intellectually, physically and aesthetically in an all-round way, have a solid foundation, strong ability and high quality, and be able to engage in technology promotion, management, teaching and scientific research related to flower and landscape design in enterprises and institutions such as agriculture and forestry, and have the ability to further study independently.
