The Three Gorges University is not a 2 1 1 institution, nor is it a 985 institution. Hubei 985 universities are: Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology; 2 1 1 Universities include: Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, China Geo University, Wuhan University of Technology and Huazhong Normal University.

The Three Gorges University was approved by the Ministry of Education on May 25th, 2000, and was formed by the merger of the former Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges College. It was jointly established by the Ministry of Water Resources and Hubei Province.

It was selected into the second batch of "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan" of the Ministry of Education, the basic capacity building project of universities in the central and western regions (Phase II) and "domestic first-class universities" in Hubei Province.

The school emblem includes the emblem and badge. The school emblem is a double circular symbol. At the top is the Chinese name of "Three Gorges University", at the bottom is the corresponding English name, and in the middle is sail, which means "sailing as the source".

The school badge is a rectangular badge with the name of the school worn by faculty and students. Teachers wear yellow characters on a red background and students wear scarlet letters on a white background.
