University of Tokyo 1877 was born. It was formed by the merger and reorganization of "Tokyo Kaicheng School" and "Tokyo Medical College" during the Meiji Restoration. It is the first national comprehensive university in Japan, with four departments of science, science, literature and medicine and a university preparatory school. Some departments can be traced back to the period of Emperor Lingyuan.

The school was renamed "Imperial University" on 1886, which is the first imperial university established in Japan. 1897 was renamed "Imperial University of Tokyo"; 1September 1947 after World War II was officially named "Tokyo University".
