The Department of Materials Science and Engineering was established in 1988, which was formed by the former teaching and research group of materials physics in department of engineering physics, the former teaching and research group of metallic materials in department of mechanical engineering and the teaching and research group of inorganic nonmetallic materials in the Department of Chemical Engineering. At present, the Department of Materials has established the State Key Laboratory of New Ceramics and Fine Technology; Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials of Ministry of Education, Central Laboratory of Institute of Materials Science and Engineering, Friction Materials Division of State Key Laboratory of Tribology, Industry-University-Research Base of High-tech Ceramics in charge of the State Council Economic and Trade Office, Bainite Steel Promotion Center in charge of Ministry of Science and Technology, and Modern Materials Information Network Center.
At present, the department only has 1 undergraduate major-materials science and engineering, including five disciplines: material physics, metal physics, inorganic non-metallic materials, composite materials and electronic materials. It has the right to award doctoral and master's degrees in materials physics and chemistry, materials science, nuclear fuel cycle, materials and other disciplines.

College of Metallurgy and Ecological Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing
The College of Metallurgical and Ecological Engineering has two undergraduate majors: metallurgical engineering and ecology. It has received two loan support from the World Bank. It is the key construction unit of the national "2 1 1" project, with good teaching and scientific research conditions.
Metallurgical engineering is the dominant professional discipline of University of Science and Technology Beijing, and it is a national first-class discipline. Among them, metallurgical physical chemistry and iron and steel metallurgy are national key disciplines, with the right to award all bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and a postdoctoral mobile station. It also cooperates with universities in the United States, Germany, Japan and other countries to train doctoral students.

The College of Materials Science and Engineering evolved from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology on the basis of the Second Department of Mechanical Engineering when Huazhong University of Science and Technology 1953 was founded. College is the teaching and research base of the national "2 1 1" project. It has the right to award master's and doctor's degrees, the State Key Laboratory of Plastic Forming Simulation and Mould Technology, the State Key Discipline of Material Processing Engineering and the Key Discipline of Material Science in Hubei Province. School of Materials Science and Engineering of South China University of Technology was founded in 1995. The college includes polymer materials, inorganic nonmetallic materials and other disciplines, and has two national key disciplines, namely, material science and material processing engineering (part), and carries out complete teaching from undergraduate to master's and doctoral degrees and extensive research from basic research, applied research to engineering development.
The college has three undergraduate majors: polymer materials and engineering, inorganic nonmetallic materials engineering (new building materials and decoration design) and electronic science and technology (electronic materials and components), and five postgraduate majors: material science, material processing engineering, material physics and chemistry, microelectronics and solid electronics, and polymer chemistry and physics. It has a first-class discipline authorization point and a postdoctoral mobile station for doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Shandong University has two majors: materials science and engineering and packaging engineering. Among them, the major of materials science and engineering includes the design direction of high-performance structural materials, the direction of photoelectric information functional materials and the direction of computer-aided design and intelligent control of material processing, which belong to the department of materials science, the department of information functional materials and the department of materials engineering respectively.

It has five teaching units, including the Department of Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Metal Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials Science and Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Processing Automation, and the Department of Nano-materials Science and Engineering, as well as research units such as the Key Laboratory of Advanced Ceramics and Processing Technology of the Ministry of Education and the Shape Memory Materials Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education.
There are master's, doctor's and postdoctoral mobile stations in the fields of material science, material processing engineering, material physics and chemistry, biomedical engineering and applied chemistry. Material processing engineering is a national key discipline, and material science is a key discipline in Tianjin.
