Materials science and engineering.

In the Catalogue of Disciplines and Specialties for Granting Doctoral and Master's Degrees and Training Postgraduates, formulated and promulgated by the Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, materials science and engineering belong to one of the first-class disciplines of engineering, and there are three two disciplines, namely, materials physics and chemistry, materials science and materials processing engineering.

The major of materials science and engineering is to study the composition, structure, processing technology, performance and application of materials. In modern science and technology, materials science is one of the three pillars of national economic development.

The main professional directions are metal materials, inorganic nonmetallic materials, polymer materials, wear-resistant materials, surface strengthening, material processing engineering and so on.

The representative universities in China are: Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Harbin Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiaotong University; Qingdao University of Science and Technology Polymer Materials; Southwest Jiaotong University, Central South University and South China University of Technology.

Materials are everywhere.

There are all kinds of substances in the world, and they are everywhere. Everyone will encounter many materials such as metal, rubber, magnetism, photoelectricity, etc. every day, ranging from a needle, a piece of paper, a plastic bag and a piece of clothing to transportation, medical equipment, engineering construction, information communication and aerospace.

Materials science and engineering is a wide-caliber specialty involving materials science, engineering and chemistry. Based on materials science, chemistry and physics, this major mainly studies the composition, structure, processing technology, properties and applications of materials. In fact, the history of human civilization is a history of how to make better use of and create materials. The continuous innovation and development of materials has also greatly promoted the development of social economy.

What is material science and engineering?

In the catalogue of undergraduate majors in colleges and universities, materials science and engineering belong to the first-class discipline of engineering materials, and the two disciplines under it includes several main professional directions such as materials science, materials physics and chemistry, and materials processing engineering. Materials also include many specialties, mainly including: metal materials engineering, inorganic non-metal materials engineering, composite materials and engineering, polymer materials and engineering, etc.

Materials science and engineering majors usually arrange basic subjects such as advanced mathematics, linear algebra, general physics, computer foundation, C language, English and so on in the first and second years of college. Specialized courses are offered after the senior year, such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, introduction to materials science and engineering, physical properties of materials, mechanics of materials, foundation of materials engineering, basic experiments of materials, mechanical properties of engineering materials, modern materials research technology, etc. (Specialized courses will vary according to the school's emphasis).
