The University of Sheffield has developed from three local colleges: Sheffield Medical College (founded in 1828), Harbour College (1879) and Sheffield Technical College (1884). 1897, the three colleges merged to form the University College of Sheffield. 1905 was granted a royal charter and promoted to the University of Sheffield.
