Qian Mu, a master of Chinese studies, 1930 went to yenching university to teach. He was very dissatisfied with the buildings of Yanda University named after "M" and "S". He thinks that such a name has no Chinese flavor at all and should be changed to China's name.
At that time, a school affairs meeting was specially held, so the "M" building was changed to the "Mu" building, the "S" building to the "Comfort" building, the "Gong Bei" building to the "Office" building, and all other buildings were named as China.
There is also a lake in Yanyuan, with beautiful scenery, but it has no name yet. At that time, we decided to have a name together. But I have tried many names, but I always feel inappropriate. Finally, it was simply called "unnamed lake", which is the origin of today's unnamed lake in Peking University.
The unnamed lake used to be supplied with water by Wanquan River. The area around Weiming Lake belonged to Shuchun Garden in Qing Dynasty, and Qianlong gave it to his favorite small Shenyang. In this building, there are 64 towers, 357 verandas, pavilions and thousands of rooms, which are extremely luxurious. After Shenyang was later raided, Shu Chunyuan changed hands several times. In the Qing Dynasty, it was an artificial lake in Shuchunyuan, a small Shenyang garden affiliated to Yuanmingyuan.
In the 1920s, it became a part of yenching university, and the school asked designer henry killam murphy to plan the campus layout. This lake was named the unnamed lake by Qian Mu. 1952, yenching university was revoked by the administration, and Peking University moved from the city center to the former site of Yanda University. Since then, Weiming Lake has become a part of Peking University campus.
The characteristics of the unnamed lake:
In the whole Yan Garden, the unnamed lake is more like a vast ocean. Under the action of light, the lake seems to have thousands of stars moored, emitting ever-changing light. On the unnamed lake, the tower shadow of the lake can be seen in the east; West can watch the sunset in the bell tower; In the south, there are mountains and lakes; The architectural shadows in the north are full of poetry and painting.
