University ranking is a kind of ranking that some ranking institutions and organizations publish research reports and academic papers in English according to various scientific research and teaching standards, quantitatively evaluate the data, reports, achievements and prestige of related universities, and form a ranking after weighting. In order to standardize the behavior of university ranking institutions, UNESCO, the European Center for Higher Education Research and the Washington Institute of Higher Education Policy jointly initiated the establishment of an international expert group on university ranking in 2004.
At the second meeting held in Berlin in May 2006, a series of quality standards and operational examples of higher education rankings, namely the Berlin Principles, were discussed and adopted.
