The Department of Architecture was established at the initiative of Academician Cai and with the assistance of the Department of Architecture of Southeast University. The Department of Civil Engineering was founded by President Sakamoto himself in 1937 and served as the first dean. The Department of Urban Planning was formally established in 2007 based on the actual needs of the national Haixi development strategy, with a solid architectural discipline and the advantages of Xiamen University in marine, environmental, economic, social and humanities disciplines. Professor Ma Wu Ding, a well-known domestic urban and rural planning scholar, was appointed as the first department head by the Dean. Now there are urban and rural planning majors, and there are undergraduate (bachelor of engineering) and graduate (master of engineering, master of engineering) degree awarding rights. Since its establishment, the Department of Urban Planning has developed rapidly in teaching, scientific research and practice, and the graduates' further study or employment situation is ideal.
The college has formed the following characteristics in personnel training: (1) Insist on teaching as the center, closely combine teaching, scientific research and engineering practice, and promote teaching with scientific research and engineering practice. The students of our college have been on the list in the national architectural design competition for college students for many years. In recent years, they have won the first prize, the second prize, the third prize and many excellent prizes in international and regional architectural design competitions. At the same time, the College participated in the establishment of Xiamen University Architectural Design Institute (with Grade A qualification of 1998), Xiamen University Urban and Rural Planning Design Institute, architectural and civil engineering University Experimental Teaching Center, Xiamen University School of Architecture and Planning, and Xiamen University Cross-Strait Urban Planning College, forming an educational mechanism combining teaching, scientific research and production practice and a multi-level school-running system for graduate students and undergraduates.
