The center was named "Hanming Building" to permanently commemorate the donation of Hanming Education Science Foundation. In April 2006, when Xiamen University celebrated its 85th anniversary, Xiao Enming, the founder of the Foundation and the 86th graduate of Xiamen University's Department of International Trade, learned that his alma mater was going to build a science and art center, and decided to generously donate 30 million yuan to fund the construction of the center. He hopes to give back to his alma mater and provide a stage for his alma mater to show his scientific and artistic achievements. At the same time, he also encouraged more Xiamen University alumni to carry forward the spirit of Chen Jiageng, keep in mind the school motto of "striving for perfection" and make greater contributions to the country, society and school.
