The research institute is a high-level compound talent training base, a basic technology research and development base and a supporting unit to solve major basic and key technical problems for China's automobile industry. The college has four undergraduate majors: vehicle engineering, industrial design (body design), thermal energy and power engineering (automobile engine) and thermal energy and power engineering (thermal energy). Vehicle engineering is the earliest national key discipline in the domestic automobile field, and it has the State Key Laboratory of Vehicle Dynamics Simulation.

The college has more than 200 teaching and research teams with Professor Guo Konghui, an academician of the Academy of Engineering, as the core, including 45 professors. There are 68 associate professors, including academician of China Academy of Engineering 1 person, member of discipline evaluation group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee 1 person, Changjiang Scholar 1 person, Taishan Scholar 1 person, and 29 doctoral supervisors. More than 50% of teachers have doctorates.

The college supports 2 postdoctoral mobile stations, 3 doctoral degree authorization points, 7 master degree authorization points and 4 undergraduate majors, among which 2 majors of vehicle engineering, power machinery and engineering are the first batch of key construction majors of "2 1 1" project.
