It is based on mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry and other natural science disciplines, and serves and supports engineering disciplines. It is a new discipline combining science and engineering, and its research fields involve natural science, applied science and engineering. The development and enrichment of materials science and engineering disciplines have enriched people's understanding of natural science and promoted the progress of many engineering disciplines.
The first-level discipline of materials science and engineering is divided into three two disciplines, namely, materials physics and chemistry, materials science and materials processing engineering. Material science is a discipline that studies the relationship between material composition, structure, technology, performance and performance, and provides scientific basis for material design, manufacturing, process optimization and rational use. Modern materials pay more attention to the study of various materials and their mutual penetration and comprehensiveness. Building materials or civil engineering materials are one of the branches.
The major of materials science in the School of Civil Engineering of Central South University is mainly civil engineering materials (building materials). Approved by the Ministry of Education and the National Academic Degree Office 1993, Changsha Railway Institute was awarded a master's degree in building materials. After the establishment of Central South University in 2000, the Ministry of Education adjusted the major of materials science. Its main features are: ① It is closely related to civil engineering such as railways, bridges, tunnels, highways, industrial and civil buildings, and focuses on solving the scientific and engineering problems involved in the preparation, processing and use of civil engineering materials; ② Study the composition and preparation technology of cement-based materials and their concrete; ③ Solve the key engineering materials and related technical problems needed for high-speed railway construction; (4) Pay equal attention to basic research and applied research, and attach importance to innovation. The basic theoretical research on the application of high performance concrete and its special superfine powder admixture and high performance composite admixture is at the forefront in China; ⑤ It is at the leading level in China in the research and application of cement emulsified asphalt mortar and its related technologies.
