The predecessor of the Institute of Surveying and Mapping is the former Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Mapping, which was established in 1956. The college is located in Wuhan, the south bank of the Yangtze River, on the shore of East Lake in Wuchang, and is accurately located at the southern foot of the scenic Luojia Mountain. Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Mapping is directly under the Ministry of Education. 1958, the college was placed under the management of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping and renamed Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Mapping. 1978, Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Mapping was approved by the state as a national key university; 1980 was recognized by the State Council as one of the first units with the right to confer master's and doctor's degrees; 1985 10, the college was renamed Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping. 1993, the former Department of Geodesy and the Department of Engineering Survey of Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping merged to form the School of Geodesy and Engineering. In February 2000, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping was placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. In August 2000, the Ministry of Education merged and reorganized the former Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, the former Wuhan University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, the former Hubei Medical University and the former Wuhan University to form a new Wuhan University. Under the new organizational system of Wuhan University, the School of Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology of Wuhan University was established on the basis of the School of Surveying and Mapping Engineering. In September 20001year, the college was renamed as the College of Surveying and Mapping.
