Australian Institute of Advanced Technology was formally established in 1998. Founded by Tongji University and La Trobe University in Australia, it is a secondary college of Tongji University. The college draws on and introduces the running mode and experience of Australian higher education to cultivate talents who can skillfully use English and master the professional and technical knowledge and skills urgently needed by Shanghai's economic development. The college adopts a flexible school-running mechanism, introduces educational plans, teaching materials and teachers of related majors in Australia, and offers "Enterprise Management" and "Information System" majors. Up to now, 1280 students have signed up.

The College has signed cooperation agreements with many universities in Australia, Britain and other countries on the "2+2" mode of running a school, that is, two years in Tongji University's Australian Institute of Advanced Technology and two years in foreign universities. More than 70% of the students who completed their studies in the college went to Australia, Britain, New Zealand and other countries for further study.
