It is a provincial key university with the earliest undergraduate normal education and the longest running history in Sichuan Normal University.

It has been selected into the National Excellent Teacher Training Plan, Excellent Engineer Education Training Plan, National New Engineering Research and Practice Project, National Innovation Plan, and Sichuan 20 1 1 Plan, and is an institution that implements the policy of free education for normal students, a national demonstration university that deepens the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education, a key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, and a national first-class undergraduate professional construction site.

The members of the Sino-Russian "Yangtze River-Volga River" University Alliance in Chengdu-Chongqing Twin Cities Economic Circle are eligible to recommend graduate students for exemption. The school was founded in 1946, and its birth has a direct historical origin with Northeastern University. In the early days of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Northeastern University moved to Santai County, Sichuan Province. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Northeastern University moved back to Shenyang.

Liuchuan teachers and students founded the North Sichuan Agricultural College in the original site. 1949, Xishan College was absorbed and renamed as North Sichuan University; 1950 merged with North Sichuan College of Literature and moved to Nanchong City, Sichuan Province. 1952 Sichuan Normal University was established with North Sichuan University as the main body, and some majors of East Sichuan Education College (formerly China Rural Construction College), Sichuan University and West China University were merged.
