Why is Peking University called Yanyuan?
Yanyuan is short for yenching university. In the early years of the Republic of China, Americans bought Shuchun Garden, Hongya Garden, Langrun Garden, Weixiu Garden and Chengze Garden from Chen, Xu Shichang. These gardens were given to princes and nobles by the Qing emperor. Si Tuleideng connected these gardens and established a missionary school named yenching university. The gardens in the campus of Yanda University are collectively called Yan Garden. The Kuomintang government retreated to Taiwan Province Province, Si Tuleideng left China and yenching university was dissolved. 1952, Peking University moved to the former site of Yanyuan, referred to as Peking University, and no longer used the abbreviation of Yanyuan. Yanyuan is only preserved as a place name.
