Content introduction? introduce

Introduction to Freudian Psychology was published in 1954. It was written to introduce the structure, motivation and development of Freud's normal personality to students and the public. Obviously, the purpose of writing has been achieved, because many people read this book as soon as it came out.

For many years, we have always wanted to write a book introducing Jung's psychological thought. But we always hesitate, because we don't think such a book will have too many readers. American psychologists, like psychologists in other countries, pay little attention to this Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist who died in 196 1. Their only interest in Jung was his word association experiment at the beginning of this century (Jung therefore came to the United States to give lectures at the invitation of American psychologists in 1909) and his later experiments designed to measure his introversion and extroversion concepts. When they finally start to consider his ideas, they tend to reject them. Their criticism of Jung is sometimes fair, but it is more based on misunderstanding of Jung.

Of course, part of the fault should be attributed to Jung himself. His loose writing often makes it difficult to understand his ideas. Because his articles have a deep understanding of topics that people don't know much and have little interest in, many readers are discouraged and afraid to ask.

However, in recent years, positive interest in Jungian psychology has begun to develop, especially among the younger generation of psychologists, college students and the general public. They think that some of Jung's views on human behavior are of great significance. We think so too. We think Jung is one of the most important reformers and promoters in modern thought. If we ignore him, we will miss the whole idea closely related to this difficult time. This is our intention to write this book. We hope this book can play the same role for Jung, just as Introduction to Freud's Psychology did for Freud, and introduce Jung's basic concepts about the structure, motivation and development of normal personality to readers.

Like Introduction to Freud's Psychology, this book is purely introductory. We try to explain Jung's concepts and theories concisely, clearly and accurately, without evaluating his thoughts or comparing with other psychologists and psychoanalysts. We will not talk about Jung's views on abnormal behavior (neurosis and psychosis) and psychotherapy, nor will we discuss all the works of Jung psychologists and psychiatrists who have contributed to analytical psychology.

In this book, we use Jung's published works. They have been translated into English, and nineteen volumes of Princeton University Press have been published. Unless otherwise specified, all quotations in this book are from this edition of Jung's Collected Works. We hope that this introductory book will encourage readers to dabble in these original works.
