Yenching university is a famous missionary university founded by four American and British Christian missionaries in the first half of the 20th century. 1952 In the process of national faculty adjustment, yenching university was revoked. Before the founding of New China, there were 14 missionary universities in China, namely yenching university, cheeloo university, Soochow University, St. John's University, Zhijiang University, West China United University, Huazhong University, Jinling University, South China Women's College of Arts and Sciences, Xiangya Medical University, Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences, Hujiang University, Lingnan University and United University. Although the number is small, the starting point is very high. Under the historical conditions at that time, especially after the 1920s, missionary universities played an exemplary and guiding role in the process of educational modernization in China. Because it directly introduced the modern western education model in many aspects such as system, organization, plan, curriculum, methods and even rules and regulations, it had a far-reaching impact on education and society. Once upon a time, American and British churches established three missionary schools in Beijing:
1, Peking University: 1889 was founded by the American-Israeli-American Association, formerly known as Chongnei Li Huai College, and its president was Dr. hiram Harrison Lorry. Located in Chongwenmen Chuanban Hutong (now Huiwen Middle School).
2. North China Union Medical College Women's University: founded in 1864, formerly known as Beiman Girls' School, located in Tongfujiadao Hutong, dengshikou (later renamed Beiman Girls' Middle School).
3. Tongzhou Concord University: founded in 1867, formerly known as Luhe College of the Congregation. David Sheffield is the headmaster.

After the founding of New China, the central government took over schools at all levels under the rule of the Kuomintang and run by foreigners in a planned way, so that education could meet the needs of the construction and revolution of New China as soon as possible, and gradually accepted some.

Today's Peking University campus. From1921-1926, the American architect Henry Killam Murphy (1877-1954) was hired to make overall planning and architectural design for yenching university. All the buildings are in the style of China classical palace.
The east-west axis of yenching university takes Yuquan Mountain Pagoda as the opposite scene, and passes through the stone arch bridge and Hua Biao (taken from the site of Yuanmingyuan) from the alumni gate. On both sides of the square courtyard are the Mu Building and the Democratic Building, on the front is the Gongbei Building (administrative building) at the top of Xieshan Mountain, and on both sides are the religious building and the library. Continue eastward along the central axis until you reach the Siyi Pavilion in the unnamed lake, with Boya Tower and Linhuxuan by the lake. The eastern part is bounded by the unnamed lake, which is divided into the northern male hospital and the southern female hospital. The men's college includes four male dormitories in Germany, Talent, Jun and Bei, as well as the Fahrenheit Gymnasium. Along a north-south axis, women's colleges are located in Yishouge, Nanbeige, Girls' Dormitory and Bowes Gymnasium.
Externally, yenching university buildings try to imitate the classical buildings in China, and internally, try to use the most advanced equipment at that time: heating, hot water, toilets, bathtubs, drinking fountains and so on.

Yenching university is one of the most famous missionary universities in modern China. Established in 19 16. It was originally formed by the merger of several North China Christian universities, such as Beijing Huiwen University, Tongzhou North China United University and Beijing North China Women's United University. It was jointly organized by Presbyterian Church, American-Israeli Association, American Women's Association, Congregation and London Association, formerly known as "Peking University".
Because different churches co-organized and different schools merged, the management was very chaotic at first, and there was no satisfactory principal until Si Tuleideng became the principal in 19 19. Si Tuleideng was one of the famous missionaries in China and later became the American ambassador to China. After he took office, he immediately reformed the school and renamed it yenching university. Then start building a new campus and raise funds from all walks of life.
