The predecessors of Northwestern Polytechnical University were Northwest Institute of Technology and East China Aviation Institute. There are 74 undergraduate majors, 38 master's degree authorized disciplines (including 1 interdisciplinary) and 25 doctoral degree authorized disciplines (including 1 interdisciplinary).

Seven disciplines, including materials science, engineering, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth science and mathematics, rank 1‰ before ESI international disciplines, among which materials science and engineering rank 1‰, forming a 3M (Materials, Electromechanical, Mechanics) discipline group led by the Third Aviation (Aerospace, Navigation) discipline group.

The school has gathered a team of high-quality teachers with moderate scale, reasonable structure, excellent quality and distinctive features, with more than 700 national high-level talents as the backbone, including 37 academicians of the two academies (including external recruitment), 35 Changjiang scholars, 25 leading talents of the "Ten Thousand Talents Program", 25 winners of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, 5 national teaching masters, 28 national teams and 99 national young talents.
