Peking University, founded in 1898, was originally named Shi Jing University Hall. It is the first national university in China in modern times, the highest institution recognized by China, and one of the most important universities in Asia and even the world.

In the 24th year of Guangxu (1898), on June 1 1 day, Emperor Guangxu promulgated the Imperial edict of Ming Dynasty, formally proposing the establishment of Taixuetang. On July 3rd of the same year, under the auspices of Sun Jianai, Shi Jing University Hall was established. The original school site is located in Jingshan East Street (Mashenmiao) and Honglou (No.29 May 4th Street, Beijing) and Shanghai Beach (northeast of the Forbidden City). Shi Jing University Hall is the first formally established university in modern China. 1900, Shi Jing University Hall was destroyed after Eight-Nation Alliance invaded China and entered Beijing. 190265438+February, Shi Jing University Auditorium resumed. In May of the first year of the Republic of China (19 12), Shi Jing University was renamed as the National Peking University, which was the first university in China's history to be named "National", and Yan Fu became the president.
