Kunming University of Science and Technology, located in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is a comprehensive key university in Yunnan Province. Established by the Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the People's Government of Yunnan Province, it was selected as the "Basic Capacity Building Project of Central and Western Universities" and the National High-level University Construction Postgraduate Project.

The "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the universities whose overseas students receive scholarships from the China government, the first batch of demonstration universities in China to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education, the bases for the transformation and technology transfer of scientific and technological achievements in universities, and the "Hundred Schools Project" and "Academic Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Program in universities" in China are national demonstration bases for innovative talents training, universities that have established national international technology transfer centers, and members of CDIO Engineering Education Alliance.

The school was formed by the merger of Kunming University of Science and Technology and Yunnan University of Technology on 1999. Kunming University of Science and Technology was founded in 1954 and renamed Kunming University of Science and Technology in 1995.

Yunnan University of Technology was founded in 1974 as Yunnan Institute of Technology, and 1994 was renamed Yunnan University of Technology. The historical starting point can be traced back to the second year of Xuantong in Qing Dynasty (19 10). 1999, the two universities merged to form the new Kunming University of Science and Technology. In 2004, Yunnan Analysis and Testing Center merged.
