Hebei University of Geology, founded in 1953, is one of the five universities directly under the former Ministry of Geology. It is a provincial key university jointly established by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the People's Government of Hebei Province. Li Tingdong, a geologist and academician of China Academy of Sciences, is the honorary president of the school.

As the earliest institution directly under the former Ministry of Geology to set up the major of economic management in New China, the school has always taken "providing talents and scientific and technological support for the sustainable development of resources and environment" as its core mission, adhered to the school motto of "being broad-minded and knowledgeable" and carried forward the glorious tradition of "working hard, being realistic and innovative". In the "Double Hundred Thousand Plan" for the construction of first-class undergraduate majors of the Ministry of Education, nine majors, including accounting, geology, groundwater science and engineering, computer science and technology, land resource management, tourism management, resource exploration engineering, engineering management and business administration, were selected as the national first-class undergraduate major construction sites.

Six majors including exploration technology and engineering, gem and material technology, economic statistics, e-commerce, information and computing science, law, geographic information science, hydrology and water resources engineering, civil engineering, marketing, economics, software engineering, surveying and mapping engineering, geological engineering, environmental engineering, visual communication design, etc. 16 were selected as provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites.
