The school was founded in 1954, formerly known as Beijing Normal University, and its history can be traced back to Tongzhou Normal University, which was established in 1905. After 1960, North China Renmin University, Beijing Workers and Peasants Teachers College, Beijing Art Teachers College and Beijing Teachers College merged one after another. 1992 Beijing Normal University merged and was renamed Capital Normal University in the same year. Since then, Foreign Language Teachers College of Beijing Union University, Beijing No.3 Normal School, Tongzhou Normal School and Beijing Kindergarten Normal School have merged.
