Nanjing University, formerly known as Sanjiang Normal School, was founded in 1902. Later, it was renamed Nanjing University on 1950 after the historical periods of Liangjiang Normal University, Nanjing Higher Normal University, National Southeast University, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, National Central University and National Nanjing University.

1952, in the adjustment of colleges and universities in China, Nanjing University adjusted some departments such as engineering, agronomy and normal education, and later merged with the College of Arts and Sciences of Jinling University founded by 1888, and was still named Nanjing University.
