On the eve of liberation, Hunan University of Science and Technology was founded in Xiangbei Institute of Architecture. In 2003, it was formed by the merger of Xiangtan Institute of Technology and Xiangtan Teachers College. It is a basic capacity-building project of the Hunan Provincial People's Government and the National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, a key university supported by the Hunan Provincial People's Government and the former state administration of work safety, and 100 universities in the central and western regions in the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" country.
