Northwest University for Nationalities, referred to as Northwest University for Nationalities, is located in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province. It is the first institution of higher learning for nationalities founded after the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), and it is a public institution directly under the Central Government under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission.

It is the national minority backbone plan jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, the China Academy of Sciences and the Gansu Provincial People's Government, the first batch of pilot universities for the reform of the education and training plan for outstanding agricultural and forestry talents, and the construction unit of high-level universities in Gansu Province.

I. Historical evolution

Northwest University for Nationalities is the first institution of higher learning for nationalities founded after the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), which is under the State Ethnic Affairs Committee. The school was founded by the First Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in Lanzhou on September 1949. 1In June, 1950, it was transformed into the third department of Northwest People's Revolutionary University Lanzhou Branch.1In August, 1950, Northwest University for Nationalities was formally established. In April 2003, it was renamed Northwest University for Nationalities.
