Hunan University of Technology is a comprehensive university with a history of more than 60 years. In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed from Zhuzhou Institute of Technology to Hunan University of Technology, and in the same year, Zhuzhou Normal University and Hunan Metallurgical Vocational and Technical College were merged.

The school has 30,568 full-time students, including 4 doctoral students, 2,570 master students, 27,086 undergraduates and 306 junior college students. At present, there are 2820 faculty members, including full-time teachers 19 17, including 295 professors, 679 associate professors and 575 doctoral supervisors.
