Shanghai Ocean University, located in Shanghai, is a university jointly established by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the State Oceanic Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. It is a national "double-first-class" university, and has been selected into the education and training plan of outstanding agricultural and forestry talents of the Ministry of Education, the national postgraduate plan for building high-level universities, the national "key discipline project with characteristics" and the construction plan of high-level local universities in Shanghai.

National new agricultural scientific research reform practice project, national college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training plan, typical employment experience of college graduates nationwide, scholarships for overseas students from China government, etc.

Shanghai's first batch of overall pilot schools for ideological and political education and teaching reform, Shanghai's first batch of demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and Shanghai-level new engineering research and reform practice projects are the vice-chairman units of China New Agriculture and Fisheries Alliance.

The school's predecessor was Jiangsu Fisheries School founded by Zhang Jian and Huang Yanpei in 19 12. It has gone through the school-running periods of Fisheries College of Agricultural College of Central University, National Sichuan Fisheries Vocational School, Shanghai Wusong Fisheries College and Shanghai Fisheries College.

1952 upgraded to Shanghai Fisheries College, the first undergraduate fisheries university in China. 1985 was renamed as Shanghai Fisheries University, and in 2008 it was renamed as Shanghai Ocean University. Comrade Jiang Zemin inscribed the name of the school.

According to the information of official website in May 2023, the school has two campuses, namely, Hucheng Ring Road Campus and Simon Road Campus. There are also 386 mu of coastal base and 56.7 mu of Xiangshan science and education base. The main campus, Hucheng Ring Road Campus, covers an area of 1.600 mu.

There are 14 colleges (departments) and 44 undergraduate majors; There are 3 postdoctoral research stations, 4 first-class doctoral programs, 3 first-class master programs 1, two disciplines master programs1and 7 professional master programs. There are nearly 12000 full-time undergraduates, more than 5000 full-time graduate students and more than 500 faculty members.
