WuhanUniversity, referred to as "Wu Da" for short, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC), the first batch of "double first-class" universities in China, and the national "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project" key universities.

Wuhan University can be traced back to 1893, when Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Huguang, founded the School of Self-improvement in Wuchang. After inheritance and evolution, it was named National Wuhan University in 1928, which was the first batch of national universities in modern China, and was renamed in 1949. In 2000, Wuhan University merged with Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University to form the new Wuhan University.
