Fujian medical university with a long history was found in 1937, and its predecessor was Fujian provincial medical college. 1939 was renamed Fujian Medical College. 1949 was renamed Fujian medical college. 1969, Fujian Medical University was established by the merger of Fujian College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Huaqiao University. 1982 was renamed Fujian medical college. 1996 changed its name to its current name in April.

After more than 70 years of construction and development, the school has formed a bachelor-master-doctor training system and an excellent school spirit of "diligence, rigor, realism and innovation", and has become a provincial medical university integrating teaching, scientific research, medical care, prevention and social services. In 2003, it was identified as a key construction university by Fujian Provincial People's Government.
